Mileage claim calculator
How much you can claim for business journeys in your own car, van, motorbike or bicycle, at HMRC's 2026/27 rates.
£3,300.00
How the rates work
HMRC's approved mileage rates cover the whole cost of running the vehicle for business: fuel, insurance, servicing and wear. Cars and vans get 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p after that. Motorbikes are 24p and bicycles 20p, whatever the distance.
The 55p rate applies from 6 April 2026. Self-employed people can use these rates as simplified expenses instead of working out actual costs, as long as they stick with that method for the vehicle. Employees can be paid up to these rates tax-free.
Can I claim fuel as well as mileage?
No. The mileage rate already includes fuel and running costs. You can still claim parking, tolls and congestion charges separately.
Is driving from home to work a business journey?
Not if it's an ordinary commute to a permanent workplace. Trips to clients, sites or temporary workplaces usually count. HMRC's guidance on travel explains the rules.
What records do I need?
