How sole traders are taxed
As a sole trader you pay tax on profit: your income minus allowable expenses. The first £12,570 is usually tax-free (the Personal Allowance). Above that, Income Tax is 20%, rising to 40% on profit over £50,270 and 45% over £125,140. Scotland has its own six bands.
Class 4 National Insurance comes on top: 6% on profit between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above it. Class 2 is no longer charged, though you can pay it voluntarily to protect your State Pension if profit is under £7,105.
When the bill arrives
Self Assessment tax is due by 31 January after the tax year ends. If your bill is over £1,000 you'll usually also make two payments on account towards next year, on 31 January and 31 July, each half of this year's bill.
That's why the first year catches people out: you can owe 150% of a year's tax in one January. A steady percentage set aside from every payment avoids the shock.
Is this calculator up to date?
It uses 2026/27 rates (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027) for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, checked in October 2026.
What counts as an allowable expense?
Costs you have only to run the business: equipment, software, stock, business travel, marketing, accountant fees, and the business share of things like your phone or home office. Personal spending and client entertainment don't count.
What about the £1,000 trading allowance?
If your expenses are small, you can deduct a flat £1,000 instead of real costs. Put 1,000 in the expenses box to see the difference.
Does it include student loans or a salary from a job?
No. It covers self-employed profit only. A salary uses up your allowance and bands first, so your tax on profit would be higher.
Do you store what I type?
No. The calculation happens in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
