A purchase order (PO) is your written order to a supplier: what, how many, the agreed price and the delivery date. When the supplier accepts it, it's a contract, and their invoice should quote the PO number so you can match the two.
Number your POs in sequence and keep a copy with the supplier's invoice and delivery note.
