Getting paid as a web developer

  • For day-rate work, invoice monthly with the number of days as the quantity and attach or reference the timesheet.
  • Quote the purchase order (PO) number if the client gave you one. Large companies won't pay an invoice without it.
  • If you work through your own limited company, the invoice must show the company's registered name and number.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

Does IR35 change how I invoice?

No, the invoice looks the same. IR35 decides how you're taxed if you work through a limited company; outside IR35 you invoice normally from your company.

What payment terms are normal for contractors?

30 days is common with larger clients, sometimes from the end of the month. Agree terms before you start and put them on every invoice.
