Getting paid as a translator

  • Use the word count as the quantity and your per-word rate as the price.
  • Set a minimum charge for short jobs and show it as its own line.
  • Agencies often need their job or PO number on the invoice before they'll pay.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

Do I charge VAT to overseas agencies?

Services to business clients outside the UK are usually outside the scope of UK VAT, even if you're registered. The invoice should say so.

Source or target word count?

Either, as long as it's agreed. Source words are more common because the price is known up front.

Is this translator invoice template free?
