Getting paid as a virtual assistant

  • Retainers billed in advance smooth your income; extra hours go on the next invoice.
  • Summarise what you did in a line or two; clients approve faster when they see the value.
  • Re-charge tools and subscriptions you pay for on the client's behalf at cost.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

Retainer or hourly?

A retainer for regular clients (a set block of hours each month), hourly for occasional work.

Do unused retainer hours roll over?

Only if you say so. Most VAs don't roll them over, or allow a small number; state it on the invoice.
