Getting paid as a tutor

  • Invoice monthly for the lessons in that month, or sell blocks of lessons paid up front.
  • Put your cancellation policy on every invoice so it's agreed, not argued.
  • Parents pay faster by card or Pay by bank from a link than by typing in bank details.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

Do private tutors charge VAT?

Private tuition by a sole trader in a subject normally taught in schools or universities is usually exempt from VAT. Check HMRC's education guidance if you're near the threshold.

Can I charge for missed lessons?

Yes, if your terms say so before the lesson was booked. A line on each invoice and your booking message makes it clear.

Is this tutor invoice template free?

Yes, with no sign-up. Fill it in, download the PDF and send it. Nothing you type is uploaded.
