Getting paid as a carpenter

  • For made-to-measure work, take a deposit before buying materials, and show it on the final invoice.
  • Describe exactly what was built and fitted so the invoice doubles as a record of the work.
  • If you subcontract to builders, CIS rules apply to your labour.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

How much deposit is normal for bespoke joinery?

Often 30% to 50%, enough to cover materials. Agree it in the quote and invoice it before ordering timber.

Do I invoice for design time?

If you draw up designs, either include them in the price or add a design line; some carpenters credit it against the build if the customer goes ahead.
