Getting paid as a plumber

  • Show labour and parts separately; customers trust an itemised bill and it helps if there's a warranty claim.
  • Put the job address and date on the invoice, especially for landlords and letting agents.
  • Take card payment on the doorstep with a payment link instead of waiting for a bank transfer.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

Do plumbers need to show VAT on parts?

If you're VAT registered, VAT applies to parts and labour alike. If you're not, you charge no VAT at all, even if you paid VAT on the parts.

Does CIS apply to plumbing?

If you work as a subcontractor for a building contractor, yes: they deduct CIS tax from the labour part. For homeowners it doesn't apply.
