Getting paid as a copywriter

  • Name each piece or batch so the client can match it to their content plan.
  • If you charge per word, show the word count and rate on the line; it heads off queries.
  • Agencies often pay on a set day each month: ask when invoices need to arrive to make the next run.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

How do I invoice per word?

Put the word count as the quantity and your per-word rate as the price, for example 1,200 × £0.20. Or price each article as one line if that's what you quoted.

Should I wait until the client publishes?

No. Invoice on delivery of the agreed copy. Publishing dates are out of your control.

Is this copywriter invoice template free?
