Getting paid as a graphic designer

  • Take a deposit (often 50%) before starting, then show it as a minus line on the final invoice so the balance is obvious.
  • Hold back the editable source files until payment. It's normal and clients accept it.
  • Describe deliverables, not hours, for fixed-price work: "Logo, 3 concepts, 2 revisions" avoids arguments later.

Every UK invoice also needs a unique number, the date, your name and address, your client's details, what you supplied and the amount due. More on what an invoice must show.

Should I invoice per hour or per project?

Per project for defined work like logos, so clients know the price up front. Keep an hourly rate on the invoice for extra rounds of changes.

What if the client wants more revisions?

Invoice them as a separate line at your hourly rate. Stating included revisions on the first invoice makes this easy to justify.
